We're at Melways Map 28, grid K9, corner of Davies St. & Mt. Alexander Rd.

Nestled amongst the popular Mount Alexander Rd precinct, five minutes from the city is Sassy Food Room, a haven for fine diners. For a chic culinary experience without equal in the greater Melbourne area, treat yourself and guests to lunch, dinner or weekend brunch at this fine, well-established Mount Road dining mecca. Sassy announces itself, readily visible on the left side of Mt Alexander Rd as you pass the Puckle St junction on your way to the city. 688 Mount Rd is a corner building; double-storey Victorian, open-faced brick interior. Authentic and timeless, it woos and swoons. Fabulous food, a broad and varied winelist. Sassy is an exciting, modern dining experience, specializing in contemporary Melbourne cuisine, appropriately reflecting the culture of Melbourne. Diners find the Sassy experience stylish and classy. Attracted to the intimacy are colleagues or couples meeting for an occasion of impeccable taste. Sassy is becoming a favourite rendezvous at dinner and lunch. Experience the welcome, the caring attitude and the service that go with relaxed dining. A visit is a must.

The first thing you may notice as you enter the building, is that it oozes the excitement of early Australiana. I love the original timber flooring, it creaks and cups with the change of weather. Sassy Food Room sports front shuttered windows which are opened when weather permits. Relaxed weekend brunchers can enjoy the balminess of open-air dining in summer, or the warmth of open fires in winter. Sassy boasts his & her fireplaces, the central hearth adjacent the kitchen, is a cozy fire-warmed nook, perfect for a cocktail party or stand-up reception.

As to the history of the building itself, it certainly has experienced many incarnations. It is most recently remembered as a leadlight shop, the past proprietor of which, still visits us annually when he's in the country. Prior to that as a saddler's, a chemist's immediately after the second world war, and prior to that, there are reports of it being used as a bank, a nunnery and as a hotel for miners on their way to and from the Ballarat goldfields. Patrons and locals are often overheard to compare anecdotes of their get-togethers at Sassy, and it's been that way for years. For me, memories of personalities and goings-on are everywhere, in every nook and cranny of the place. Great dishes and fabulous times at Sassy.

If you are here for dinner, you're more likely to experience the thrill and hum of the place as funky background tunes set a lively pace for a night of food and drink. The evening gains momentum as ambient lighting begins to animate smiles and gestures. Sassy's a place for self-expression and a centre for Moonee Ponds' night-life and wining-dining culture. It's a place for social exchange and being seen. A topical and fascinating menu, current releases of the latest essential wines, and a vibrancy that few full-service eat & drink venues can offer.

The Food Room exudes a warm & professional ambience with staff and chefs having trained at top hat restaurants. All within a classic European styled Victorian architeture with a charming courtyard for Al fresco diners and a function room on the mezzanine level.
